10/01/2008 - ARGH! More damned host problems! Now it's an OS problem. A crucial process quit for apparently no reason. Will investigate when I get home. And I'll step up the priority of getting the new server with the new OS online. This is at least as irritating for me as it is for everyone else.

09/20/2008 - Oops. Sorry about the outages. We had several outages, including one for a couple of days. I was on vacation for the first couple, and while the box's kind hosts rebooted it for me, and we assumed it was on a dead UPS, the third time proved to be a charm. The power supply on the box itself died utterly. Today I swapped the drive into a new box, and we're back up (hopefully this one will prove more robust).

09/13/2008 - Back in the USA! I'm a bit wiped out, and for some reason, I thought I'd be back tomorrow. Confusing International Date Line! It was a great trip, though!
-
09/02/2008 - One last task for the house closing. They need a form with Buttercup's notarized signature on it FedExed back to Washington. Someday ask me the difference between getting something notarized in the US and getting something notarized in China!
-
08/31/2008 - I'm off to see Buttercup in China! Flying from Seattle to Guangzhou via Tokyo. Details at GuangzhouTrip200808.

08/22/2008 - Yes, barely a month later, I closed on the purchase of my new house! Awesome thanks to Kim, Brian and Brad Golik at John L Scott Real Estate, Jan Tabor at Rainier Title, Chuck Wade at Wells-Fargo, Tom Sessions at State Farm, and Ed Ruth at Windermere Real Estate for helping me get this together in such short order, and in the face of so much 3-way international document signing!
-
07/14/2008 - I finally closed on the sale of my townhouse! In *this* market! Awesome thanks to my realtor, Valerie Smallwood for all her help!

06/15/2008 - Recall:
-
01/22/2007 - According to the Weekly World News, Hillary has chosen Bigfoot as her running mate for the 2008 election. Wise choice!
-
Here's a picture! Now that Hillary's lost the nomination, perhaps Bigfoot will be available for Obama's VP.

01/02/2008 - Began my new career at Microsoft (not joking!) with new employee orientation. Good thing I had that down time to see what the sun looked like. I haven't seen it much since moving to the Seattle area! Northern Virginia was a good place to live for people who like variety in dining. But it can't hold a candle to the Seattle area. My culinary condolences to my friends in Idaho.

Before you ask, no, I am not part of the Windows Vista or Microsoft Office teams. I am working for the Windows Mobile Embedded group. Specifically, I'm working on improving connectivity between cells phones, PDAs and the like and Windows.
-
12/24/2007 - Arrived safely in the Seattle area after driving a 26' Penske rental truck from Herndon, VA through Newtown, PA, Cohoes, NY, and Rigby, ID. Why? Because I've accepted a job with Microsoft (yes, I'm serious) and relocated to the Seattle area! And yes, I'm selling my townhouse in VA.

09/08/2007 - After a truly horrible job experience, SmithMicro showed me the door. No loss. It was clear from about day 2 that they thought they'd hired a manager of some sort, while I hired on as a senior programmer. But, they have a company policy that prevents one from being fired for the first 90 days of probation period. I can only conclude that they planned to fire me at the 90 day mark since they took 7 weeks to get a PC for me, and at no point at all was I given access to source code of any kind (besides what I wrote myself). The only tasking I was given was a little Windows hacking, which I did successfully, but the person who asked for it never did acknowledge receipt of the deliverables. While I'm not sorry at all to part company from Ecutel (who had been bought by SmithMicro but hadn't changed at all), it did leave me with a period of unemployment to which I was hitherto unaccustomed. If nothing else, it gave me a chance to recall what the sun looked like.

06/04/2007 - Check Point (my employer at the time) continues to be unbending on telecommuting, having done away with it after we'd all had it for a long time. Goodbye Check Point! Started a new job at SmithMicro. 10 minute commute! Hooray!

03/09/2007 - IsraelTrip200703 - My company's new owners required us to attend a week's training in Israel. Read all about it. Or... don't.

01/06/2007 - Email Bouncing - Evidently, RPI screwed the pooch before the new year and installed a spam filter so brutal that it bounced nearly every message sent to me. It took more than a week to get them to remove all spam filtering from my account (actually an alias that forwards to whatever my current real account is). So now I'm receiving spam again (which my own spam tools catch) and legitimate mail. Though some of the mailing lists I belonged to have apparently disowned me. I expect some bonehead in the RPI IT department will have their genitals expertly shredded in Hell for all eternity over this.

11/02/2006 - R.I.P. Snowy. I am again a ferretless wonder.
